My initial idea, arts and films influences

After careful consideration I've decided to use the idea of the egg broken on the ground representing fertility and the choice of to have an abortion. I feel it’s ambitious but it also offers a deep thought provoking subject. The themes vary from Consummation of love, Conception, Birth, Parenthood, Miscarriage, Termination some by choice, some by force or naturally.

PREGNANCY IN ART

The theme of fertility has been portrayed in all cultures and art throughout centuries. I've found these various works of art to be fascinating, reflecting the cycle of life, how people at the time perceived and valued child bearing and childbirth.

The Venus of Willendorf, Fertility Symbol, Pre-Historic Sculpture, (30000-25000) BC

"MY THOUGHTS"

I feel that while this ancient statue of a fertility deity is primitive in detail it is remarkable for being primordial in its symbolism.

The Tellus panel of the Ara Pacis, or Peace Altar. (9) BC. Marble.  Museo di Ara Pacis, Rome

"MY THOUGHTS"

This sculpture oF a woman holding two infants is simple but conveys moving emotions of Mother hood through in singular pose.

Jacob Jordaens - Allegory of Fertility (1623)

"MY THOUGHTS"

While I see this as a well executed painting I feel that its message isn't clear and could be miss-interpreted as an orgy.

Mary Cassatt: Maternal Caress (1890 - 1891)

"MY THOUGHTS"

Though this painting is of a simple image its nonetheless an accomplished an aesthetic quality and heartwarming image of mother and child.

Spiral fertility Goddess by Artist Noelle Hunt Inspired by ancient female fertility symbols, and the eternal spiral Date of work 01/04

"MY THOUGHTS"

This painting while colourfull and simple its rather abstract and may confuse the viewer of its intention.

"Dragon Family" in Varna, Bulgaria by Grant Scharoff

"MY THOUGHTS"

This is a magnificent display though it may have people preoccupied with the fantasy aspect and ignore the fertility, maternal theme.

Fertility Painting : The One - Leanne Wildermuth (2005)

"MY THOUGHTS"

This painting may look simple but expresses conception and even the strands of
DNA which embody the building blocks of life.

Photos of animal Embryos, stills such as these can be considered art.

"MY THOUGHTS"

These images are astounding, displaying the earliest stages of life however through an animals development as apposed to a human's. Though admittedly I feel a little discomfort when looking at these images as they expose the vulnerability of these creatures, none the less I admire the profound beauty that they provoke.

Damien Hirst's "The miraculous journey"

The sculpture under each balloon represents the story of birth. Starting with the fetus inside the uterus, conception to birth, and then ending with a sculpture of a new born baby boy that is 46-feet tall.

"MY THOUGHTS"

The bronze statue are fascinating in displaying the progression of a baby within a womb through nine months. I feel that much like the images of the animal fetuses I'm discomforted yet amazed by the iconography of these image. These displays of art were presented in Qatar where women have no rights and are treated as second class citizen being forced into arranged marriages and having to bare children. This can be interpreted as social commentary speaking against the oppression of the fairer sex.

RESEARCH AND INSPIRATION

Whilst these works of art on fertility and motherhood throughout history are all intriguing and diverse I'm deciding between settling on a simple theme and message that presents the joys of pregnancy but also the level of responsibility and if whether or not having an abortion should be considered.

PREGNANCY IN FILM

The theme of pregnancy and childbirth has been portrayed in a variety of films.

Rosemary's Baby follows a woman who has recently become pregnant, she eventually discovers that her baby is the spawn of satan. Its an engaging psychological thriller that shows that shows how pregnancy is one HELL of an experience. I strongly recommend this film, its a horror classic that guaranteed to DELIVER.

Though not directly linking to pregnancy the appearance of the Star Child gazing over the Earth has become iconic in motion picture history. This is a remarkable film that while doesn't focus on pregnancy none the less offers a profound sci-fi experience that will last for GENERATIONS.

The slice of life comedy film may be delightful for some, it was popular enough to spawn two sequels, its amusing to hear Bruce Willis's voice monologuing a baby thought's, convenient since he's starting resemble a baby now.   This film is about average offering a story of a woman splits up with the father of her child and finds a new man who assumes the role of a father figure. I doubt anyone except pregnant women would have much interest in seeing this film.

Opening sequence

This delightful comedy is a lighthearted yet average film that details a couples experience with pregnancy and bearing their first child.  Though I enjoyed it I haven't felt any desire to watch it again anytime soon.

Father of the Bride 2 sequel to the first Father of the Bride movie follows Steve Martin who's wife falls pregnant around the same time as his newly wed daughter. A average comedy flick that offers double the parenthood shenanigans.

A somewhat amusing film for some to me is a very disturbing premise of a man being pregnant, its considered one of Schwarzenegger lesser films. Watch at own risk.

This film takes a serious nitty gritty approach of the concept of a world where all women cannot bare children. The future of the human race is called into question however with the sudden appearance of  a woman who is pregnant appears, time is short to get her to safety and preserve humanity's future.

Juno portrays the story of a teen girl who falls pregnant and under goes the usual experience of child baring, its a delightful comedy that have proven popular with audiences though offering a younger more laid back perspective.

Portraying pregnancies in film and exploring the themes is a risk but filmmakers keep coming back to, its a compelling and identifiable subject matter that people can relate to, films on pregnancies offer engaging story lines that sell. These film examples are primarily family friendly comedy films offering a splice of life and educational to an extent.

FERTILISATION (CONCEPTION)

I've found a video sequencing the process of pregnancy.

Upon viewing this video it offered me a more detailed insight into conception, the video simulation shows how the mere process of conceiving a child is a complex procedure.

INFLUENCE ON MY PROJECT

I also felt it was necessary to portray whether or not we should deny a woman’s right to terminate her unwanted pregnancy, relieving her from the responsibility of motherhood, or if whether or not we’re in a right to decide if it’s an ethical solution to the problem.

While I’m prolife I do not wish to be oppressing one’s right to decide. I would strongly encourage that if they’re not ready then they have a choice to at least put the baby up for adoption. However if there are any medical concerns then the mother should undergo surgical procedures to survive the birth. Adoption is an Option.

Though this does bring up the concern of whether the mother immediately regrets their decision and lives out the rest of their life wondering if they made a right choice and wonder what’s become of the child they’ve given up.

I'm curious to incorporate both side of the spectrum offering the two different points of view.
